Sibohan O’Flynn & Building Imaginary Worlds

Wolf’s discussion of world building is especially relevant when considering “big budget” media franchises today. Sibohan’s remarks regarding the majority of innovation and experimentation coming out of marketing based on larger budgets. Franchises like the Matrix (discussed by Jenkins) have been instrumental in developing models of transmedia, and companies like Marvel employing similar strategies in expanding their world through games, television, film, digital comics etc. This inspired me to consider films that do not employ such a linear narrative structure. Wolf’s mention of David Lynch promoted me to think of Mulholland Drive- the card of clues included in the dvd release and the online discussion regarding solving the “puzzle” film. Recently Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomanic released short clips online and developed a social media campaign with the hashtag #nymphomaniac.

I find these varied approaches to be interesting and wonder if anyone can weigh in.
