Refresh! will address questions of historiography, methodology and the role of institutions of media art. The conference will contain key debates about the function of inventions, artistic practice, the prominent role of sound during the last decades and will emphasize the importance of intercultural and pop culture themes in the histories of media art.

The conference at the Banff Centre for the Arts (Sept. 28 – Oct. 1) gathers international experts to discuss the past, present and future roles of media art in our society. Guests from Germany include Dr. Oliver Grau, art history professor from Berlin and author of the MIT publication “Virtual Art. From Illusion to Immersion,” Dr. Andreas Broeckmann, Director of Germany’s foremost new media festival, the Transmediale; and Prof. Dieter Daniels, widely published art historian and media theorist from Leipzig.
